Lonar Crater at sunset

At sunset there was a large flock of birds that returned to stay the night on a little island in the lake. We watched as thousands of birds returned home, many groups of a hundred of more swooping over the rim of the crater, then diving down to what looked like an island backed with birds. There was always room for more. Our x2 zoom couldn't capture this phenomenon and we were way too pooped to go down and investigate at close range. What kind of birds remains a mystery. None of the locals seem to have taken much note of this flocking.
